Bird Photography

Bird Photography

Kari loves photographing birds of any kind. Her husband can tell you fewer things bring a bigger smile to her face faster than capturing some kind of bird on film.

About some of the birds Kari has photographed:

Bird of Prey Photography

Birds of prey capture our imagination because they seem so regal, so commanding, so powerful.  There is something about the cry of a hawk that makes the soul soar just as the bird itself soars.

Eagles are majestic, hawks are spirited, owls are mysterious, and falcons are powerful for their size.

Nature photography by its nature (no pun intended) is a touch-and-go kind of art.  A photographer typically takes hundreds (NO exaggeration) of photos before even one makes the cut.  Photographing birds, particularly birds in flight, present extra obstacles such as hard lighting conditions, shy (or sometimes overly aggressive) subjects, fineness of the film versus speed of the film, and distance from, size, and speed of the birds.

That being said, if you are a bird-lover, then no thrill quite exceeds capturing a picture of a beautiful bird in his native habitat.  Kari has spent thousands of hours outside photographing birds.  Please enjoy the fruits of her labor by visiting her Bird Gallery.

Photographing Songbirds

Although all Nature Photography requires a great deal of patience, photographing wild birds particularly does.  Many birds are shy or skittish, and taking their picture is very difficult -- particularly herons, plovers, and certain songbirds.

Songbirds generally are very small and quick which makes it more difficult to take a decent photo.  For smaller birds, such as sparrows, cardinals, and hummingbirds, the photographer must get extremely close (even with a big telephoto lens) to have the bird fill any amount of space at all in the frame. She must also be able to focus extremely quickly as the bird is unlikely to remain in one spot for very long. (Kari has found on even her best lenses, her hand is often quicker than the autofocus.)

But if the photographer is a true bird-lover, as Kari is, this patience eventually pays off in the real joy of just photographing the birds themselves.

All birds have different types of personalities -- chickadees are bold and spirited, as are wrens, sparrows are extremely social and cardinals almost always come in pairs, but mockingbirds are typically only seen by themselves (although often singing to one another).  If you are a bird-lover trying to take good pictures of birds, then you do yourself a great disservice if you ignore these personalities.

Tropical Bird Photography

Exotic or tropical birds have been a fascination to many.  They seem so, well, exotic!

Kari has photographed many parrot varieties, cockatoos, macaws, and lorikeets.  Many of these pictures are close-up bird portraits.  Parrots, particularly, have a curious and intelligent nature to them, which comes across in many of Kari’s bird photos as it does in, “Hawkhead Parrot Portrait Photo.”

She has captured a charming photo of two blue-fronted Amazon parrots lovingly preening each other in “Parrot Preening Love Photo.”  She even managed to capture a picture of a yellow-naped parrot at rest in “Yellow-Naped Naptime Photo.”

To the bird photographer photographing tropical birds, it is practically a sin to ignore the colorful plumage, but sometimes to get just the right artistic photo, a photographer must forgo the obvious and try something different, as in Kari's abstract black and white artistic photo of a cockatoo, “Cockatoo Photo.” This photo is about texture, lines, composition, and shade -- as is another one of her abstract photos of a bird's plumage and beak, “Blue Hyacinth Macaw Photo”.

If you are into exotic birds, you’ll enjoy Kari’s exotic and tropical birds in her Bird Gallery.

Waterfowl and Shore Bird Photography

As mentioned in the Songbird/Perching Bird section, photographing many water birds -- such as herons, loons, and plover -- present an additional obstacle of shyness on the part of the subject.  Luck (and acting like a bird) can help in that area, but patience is the biggest key to photographing birds successfully.

Other water and shore birds, such as swans, are not as shy, but can be very aggressive (particularly when there are chicks nearby).  More common water birds, such as gulls, ducks, and geese just need to be photographed in a more uncommon way as in Kari’s “Soaring Seagull Photo”  (which shows a beautiful New Zealand Red-billed Gull bird in flight).

If you are a bird-lover who just wants to do some “bird watching” in this Bird Gallery, or are a nature-lover interested in buying a fine art photo, you will enjoy Kari's beautiful photographs.
