As mentioned in the Songbird/Perching Bird gallery, photographing many water birds -- such as herons, loons, and plover -- present an additional obstacle of shyness on the part of the subject.  Luck (and acting like a bird) can help in that area, but patience is the biggest key to photographing birds successfully.

Other water and shore birds, such as swans, are not as shy, but can be very aggressive (particularly when there are chicks nearby).  More common water birds, such as gulls, ducks, and geese just need to be photographed in a more uncommon way as in Kari’s “Soaring Seagull Photo”  (which shows a beautiful New Zealand Red-billed Gull bird in flight).
